Born with a visual impairment in Bethlehem, George faced significant personal and economic hardships from an early age. Raised in a family strained by political instability and financial uncertainty, his future seemed uncertain. Yet, George refused to let his disability define his path.
Demonstrating remarkable determination, he pursued his education with resilience and graduated with distinction with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology, Journalism, and Media from Bethlehem University. Navigating the rigorous academic demands of a technical degree without sight, George relied on audio-based learning tools and adaptive technologies to succeed.
Recognizing the potential of technology to empower people with disabilities, George specialized in digital accessibility and became an expert in adaptive technologies that assist individuals with visual and sensory impairments. Alongside his technical pursuits, he also embraced his cultural roots through music, mastering the Qanoon, a traditional Middle Eastern string instrument.
George’s dedication and expertise led him to join the job creation program implemented by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which is designed to support Christian families in the Holy Land amid ongoing economic challenges. He was appointed as a teacher at Al-Shurouq School, a specialized institution for children with visual impairments. In this role, George not only teaches but also serves as a living example of what is possible, inspiring students to overcome their obstacles.
The program that supported George’s employment is part of a broader effort that has created over 4,000 jobs through community-based projects, strategic partnerships, and internal services. Beyond offering immediate financial relief, it sustains vital services and strengthens local infrastructure. By prioritizing meaningful work that benefits the community and offers dignified employment, the initiative serves as a model for resilience during times of crisis and instability.
George’s story exemplifies the transformative power of perseverance, technology, and community support. His journey shows that with the right opportunities and support, even the most daunting barriers can be overcome.
