On January 28, 2025, The Nazareth Sisters School of the Latin Patriarchate in Haifa hosted a pivotal meeting yesterday, marking the first official gathering of the Department of Christian Religious Education.
Presided over by Fr. Ibrahim Shomali, Director of the Catechetical Office for the LPJ schools in Galilee, the meeting brought together Fr. Johnny Abu Khalil, the school's Chaplain, Mr. Bassem Jamal, the high school principal, Mr. Hanna Rouhana, the primary school principal, along with Christian education teachers from all grade levels.
At the heart of the discussion was the vital role of Christian education in the Patriarchate's schools—a mission that has remained steadfast since their founding. Fr. Ibrahim underscored several key priorities, including:
- Living out the Christian faith authentically, as teachers influence students not only through their lessons but through their daily witness.
- Strengthening the bond between school and parish, recognizing the school as a cornerstone of pastoral life.
- Establishing regular meetings for Christian education teachers to foster collaboration and idea-sharing.
- Encouraging student participation in parish activities such as scouting, choirs, and youth groups.
- Enhancing religious curricula with extracurricular activities and innovative teaching methods.
- Organizing weekly Masses for students and ensuring all grade levels take part.
- Promoting Sunday Mass attendance within students' home parishes.
The discussion also highlighted the crucial role of parents in religious education, urging them to take an active part in the spiritual formation of their children.
Additionally, plans were set in motion for three annual catechist meetings across the Latin Patriarchate schools: the Mission Mass, a Christmas gathering, and a Lenten reflection during the 40-day period. Other initiatives included:
- Establishing a Gospel Apostles program for teachers.
- Ensuring ongoing training for educators through study updates and new resources.
- Adapting curricula to be more relevant and engaging for students.
- Integrating human and biblical values into religious education, beyond just Scripture studies.
Fr. Ibrahim also took time to review the current progress of religious education at the school, emphasizing the need for collaboration between teachers across different schools and grade levels.
The meeting concluded with a blessing from the parish priest, reaffirming the commitment to a dynamic and faith-filled Christian education.
